Advancing Free Space Optics for Next-Generation Networks

At Aircision, we spoke to Luis Oliveira about the company’s role in the Future Network Services (FNS) program and its work in developing Free Space Optics (FSO) technology. Aircision specializes in high-speed wireless communication that delivers fiber-like speeds without requiring physical cables—an essential solution for locations where fiber installation is challenging or costly.

Joining the FNS Program

Aircision joined the FNS program to better understand the requirements for future networks like 6G and to align its technology with emerging network services. Collaboration is key for Aircision, as it provides insights into industry needs and ensures that its solutions remain relevant for evolving network architectures.

Exploring the Potential of Free Space Optics

One of Aircision’s main interests in the FNS program is understanding how FSO can be integrated into future network infrastructure. The company sees FNS as an opportunity to engage with industry experts, gain access to use cases, and refine its approach to making FSO a widely applicable technology.

Advancing 5G and 6G Networks

Aircision is actively working on integrating FSO into network architectures capable of delivering ultra-high data rates of 10 Gbps and beyond. Within FNS, the company collaborates with Signify and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) as part of Program Line 1, focusing on wireless optical communication. One of their key projects involves deploying a 5 km building-to-building optical link between the High Tech Campus and TU/e, serving as a real-world test case for the technology.

Challenges in Implementing 5G/6G

Deploying 5G and preparing for 6G present key challenges, particularly in ensuring high-capacity, flexible, and cost-effective network expansion. One issue is delivering high-speed backhaul in areas where fiber is impractical. FSO can help by providing secure, high-bandwidth links without extensive infrastructure.

To scale, FSO requires advancements in photonic components and system reliability. This is why Aircision’s collaboration with TU/e and other partners is critical—it helps refine the technology and improve real-world adoption.

“We know FSO can provide high-capacity and secure connections, but it is important to identify the right use cases and integration points within a network.” according to Luis Oliveira.

Aircision’s Contribution to FNS

Aircision brings expertise in high-speed Free Space Optics and offers a wireless solution at the speeds of fiber optics, enabling fast and flexible network deployment. The company also contributes valuable knowledge on implementing and testing optical wireless solutions, working with partners to integrate FSO into next-generation networks.

Collaboration and Innovation

Aircision is particularly interested in working with network operators, research institutions, and telecom infrastructure providers to test and validate FSO technology in real-world settings. Aircision also sees an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between different program lines within FNS. In particular, the company wants to bridge the gap between Program Line 1 (intelligent components) and Program Line 3 (leading applications) to ensure FSO technology is tested in relevant environments (e.g. deployment at the 6G testbeds).

The Future of FSO in 5G/6G Networks

As demand for higher data rates and flexible network deployment continues to grow, Aircision is committed to making FSO a key element of future networks. Luis highlights the need for continuous developments in photonic components and system reliability, emphasizing that working with Photonics and Research Institutes is essential for advancing the technology.

Looking Ahead

Aircision’s participation in the FNS program underscores its commitment to developing Free Space Optics as a scalable and practical solution for future network architectures. By collaborating with industry leaders and research institutions, Aircision is tackling key challenges and ensuring that FSO technology becomes a fundamental part of next-generation 5G and 6G networks.

With ongoing projects and strategic partnerships, Aircision is well-positioned to drive innovation and contribute to the future of telecommunications.
