Successful 6G Forum during European Microwave Week 2025

On Monday 22 September 2025, the 6G Forum took place at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, organised by the FNS-6G programme as part of European Microwave Week (EuMW). The event, led by Bart Smolders (TU Eindhoven), Jos Berière (TNO), John Gajadharsing (Ampleon) and Ulf Gustavsson (Ericsson), was a great success.

The programme consisted of three themes: Applications, System Design and Deep Tech/Semicon.

Keynotes and inspiring speakers

Jacob Groote (KPN) opened the forum with a keynote speech in which he emphasised the importance of European cooperation, both from a business and technological perspective. Danny Ruijters (Philips) then showed how 6G plays a role in Image Guided Therapy, while Peter Burman (Boliden, Sweden) spoke about the crucial role of safety systems in automated mining.

Pieter Nooren (TNO) highlighted the importance of spectrum sharing in 6G and explained how harmonised spectrum policy works in Europe, focusing on the influence of existing spectrum users per country.

Technological breakthroughs

Speakers from Ericsson, Keysight and Nokia provided an overview of the latest developments in radio technology, such as Ultra/Distributed Massive MIMO, Beamforming and radar sensing. The impact of AI on these technologies was also discussed.

The deep tech section presented breakthroughs in semiconductor technology. Ampleon demonstrated the potential of GaN for more efficient amplifiers, while NXP and Imec shared innovations in InP and SiGe BiCMOS. TU Eindhoven concluded with a presentation on the role of photonics in backhauling.
