PL 3: 6G applications

Program Line 3 focuses on developing innovative 6G applications and services that accelerate digital transformation across various sectors. In doing so, the Netherlands builds on its strong position in translating digital technology into practical applications.

The Proof of Concepts from phase 1 of the FNS program - such as Wireless Factory, Image Guided Therapy, and Transport Hub - give concrete form to 6G’s revenue models and foster collaboration. In Program Line 3, companies work with end users to develop demonstrators that showcase the added value of 6G in practice. At the same time, they build a lead in knowledge, standardization, and risk management.

Work package 3.1 - Transport Hubs

This work package develops innovative 6G solutions for drone connectivity and sensing. The focus is on reliable detection and monitoring systems, including applications for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights, and on smart infrastructure for takeoff and landing sites. In this way, the work package contributes to an open, safe, and competitive European drone ecosystem.

Work package 3.2 - Image-Guided Therapy

This work package is developing a 6G demonstrator for medical applications within Image-Guided Therapy, with a special focus on the growth of office-based labs (OBLs). These specialized clinics contribute to more efficient care and a better patient experience.

Work package 3.3 - Grid Interactive Buildings

This work package focuses on smart energy management solutions and strengthening the Netherlands’ position in the rapidly growing EMS market (Electronic Manufacturing Services). The increase in flexible energy assets, such as charging stations and heat pumps, is creating new challenges in grid stability and congestion.

Work package 3.4 - Wireless Detection

This work package focuses on modernizing traffic management using 6G sensing. Replacing traditional sensors in the road surface with JCAS technology creates a system that provides richer and more reliable traffic information, such as vehicle type, speed, and direction of travel.

Work package 3.5 - 6G Wireless Factory

This work package focuses on the development of the “Wireless Factory,” in which 6G wireless technology and centralized intelligence ensure maximum flexibility in production environments. By shifting machine intelligence to edge platforms, the factory becomes more efficient and adaptive.

Work package 3.6 - Digital Sports

This work package focuses on Extended Reality (XR) applications, and in particular on exergaming, a rapidly growing market that combines physical activities with digital experiences. With the emergence of new XR products and major investments by tech companies, a significant opportunity is arising for innovative 6G applications.
